The University of Lugano (Università della Svizzera italiana, Switzerland), Faculty of Informatics, USI - Faculty of Informatics, invites applications for a Ph.D. position in the area of computational geometry, spatial decompositions, Voronoi diagrams and applications.
Applicants should have or be close to obtaining a Masters degree in Computer Science, or related areas, an affinity with algorithms, and some experience in implementation and experimentation. A strong background in algorithms & complexity, discrete mathematics, probability theory, and object oriented programming is most helpful. Fluency in English is required.
The selected candidate, together with the USI group on geometric algorithms Computational Geometry at USI, will perform research related to generalized Voronoi diagrams and their applications. Research will combine combinatorial issues, the design and analysis of efficient algorithms, implementation, and/or application problems. Voronoi diagrams are among the most fundamental structures in computational geometry and they have proved to be powerful tools in solving diverse and seemingly unrelated computational problems. International collaboration is strongly supported.
Interested candidates should apply by June 1st. For further information please contact Professor Evanthia Papadopoulou, e-mail:evanthia.papadopoulou@usi.ch, Evanthia Papadopoulou.
The Faculty application procedure is described in USI - Informatics - Ph.D. Programme. For Faculty funded positions the application deadline is May 1st (else November 1st).
The specific position is funded by a new Swiss National Science Foundation project. It is part of a collaborative project (VORONOI++) with the Graz University of Technology, University of Linz, Austria, and University of Bonn, Germany. The application deadline (with some flexibility) is June 1st.
