PhD position in Mathematics (UvA)
The Korteweg-de Vries Institute for Mathematics (KdVI) at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) invites you to apply for a PhD position on the project entitled ‘Data based routing of road traffic with incidents and random congestion’.

Project description
In this project, the main goal is to design optimal routing strategies in a road traffic network in which routes may be temporarily blocked due to incidents, or congestion may suddenly (randomly) arise at so far uncongested sites due to external reasons, for example changing local weather conditions.

We choose a model-based approach to determine routing policies for vehicles driving on highways, choosing between multiple reroute options. One of the first questions we address is what type of data would be required to determine speed changes and delays caused by the incident or sudden congestion, and how these are influenced by the elements from statistics and data analysis, stochastic modeling, network flow theory and game theory.

The position is funded by Networks, a 10 year nationwide collaborative project to investigate stochastic and algorithmic aspects of networks. You will have an opportunity to participate in activities related to this project, which include training weeks and opportunities to collaborate with other members of the project.

You will also be involved in teaching in our Bachelor and/or Master programmes in Mathematics. An appropriate travel budget will be provided to attend conferences and present relevant publications.

A Master degree in (applied) Mathematics, operations research or a related discipline;
fluency in English, both written and spoken.
Experience in teaching is a plus.
